Dr. Hamida Akhtar Begum
Dr. Hamida Akhtar Begum, formally trained as a psychologist, is an eminent scholar in Bangladesh contributing to the field of psychology and related areas of social sciences including gender and development. She graduated with Honours in Philosophy from the University of Dhaka in 1961. She bagged two Master degrees one in Philosophy in 1962 and one in Psychology in 1963. Soon after she joined the Department of Philosophy and Psychology in January, 1964 and continued teaching till her retirement in 2008. With a brilliant academic background, she went abroad for higher studies and obtained Masters and Ph.D. Degrees in social psychology in 1969 and 1973 respectively from the University of Manitoba, Canada.

In addition to teaching in the Department of Psychology, DU she served as a guest teacher in the Department of Psychiatry, IPGMR, Dhaka for about twenty years. She has been associated with the Department of Clinical Psychology and the Department of Women and Gender Studies as a part-time teacher and supervised a number of theses/research. She also worked as part-time faculty in private universities including Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and Primeasia University. Currently Dr. Hamida has been working as a part-time Professor in the Department of General and Continuing Education of North South University.

Along with academic activities Dr. Hamida has also held important administrative positions in the University of Dhaka, viz., Chairman, Department of Psychology, Director, Counseling and Guidance Center, Provost, Bangladesh-Kuwait Moitree Hall. Dr. Hamida Akhtar begum has sat in the Public Service Commission for many years as a Psychologist and also in the BCS exam board.

Dr. Hamida Akhtar Begum has over 80 publications including books and research articles published from home and abroad. Some of her important publications are Monobiggan Shabdokosh (A Bengali Dictionary of Psychological Terms) (UPL), Psychology in Bangladesh (UNESCO), Adhunik Samaj Monobiggan (Rafael-Shahriar), The First Two Decades of Psychological Research in Bangladesh (CPSRT), Exploring Mental Disorders in Bangladesh (CPSRT), Emerging New Accents: A Perspective of Gender and Development in Bangladesh (Women for Women) and Explaining Aggression and Violence: A Probe into Social psychological Factors (Socio-Vision). She has also worked in the editorial board of some reputed publications like Banglapedia (Bangladesh Asiatic Society), Bangladesh Journal of Psychology, The Dhaka University Studies (B), Dhaka University Journal of Psychology, Bangladesh Psychological Abstracts, and Journal of Bangladesh Asiatic Society. Currently, she has been working as a chief editor of three journals: Bangladesh Psychological Studies (CPSRT), Empowerment (Women for Women) and Khamatayan (Women for Women).

She has also held executive position in a number of voluntary organizations such as Bangladesh Psychological Association, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Human Development Foundation, Women for Women, Concerned Women for Family Development, Bangladesh Women's Health Coalition and Centre for Psycho-Social Research and Training.

Dr. Hamida Akhtar Begum has been associated with various development activities at home and abroad. She was actively involved in the preparatory process of the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing '95 and attended meetings and workshops held in Dhaka, Manila and Jakarta. As a member of the Steering Committee of National NGO Preparatory Committee towards Beijing'95 she made significant contribution. She also worked as a member of the Core Group for the preparation of National Policy and Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women in Bangladesh. Later she continued her activities as a member of the Steering Committee of the National Policy on Beijing Plus Five.

In recognition of her contribution, Dr. Hamida .Akhtar Begum's name has been enlisted in the Asia/Pacific Who's Who in 1997 (Publisher: Rifacimento Internationa, India), Who's Who: Bangladeshi Women at a Glance (Publisher: Bangladesh Alliance for Women Leadership) 2011, and Marquis Who's Who in the World, 15th edition.
